The biggest medical research endowment fraud in the world

From 1 January 2015, the Government will establish a Medical Research Future Fund (the Fund) that will grow to $20 billion — the largest of its kind in the world.

The Fund will facilitate Australia maintaining a world class medical research sector, with access to cutting edge innovation and clinical breakthroughs in our hospitals — the underpinnings of the health system of the future.

The Fund will provide significant new funding to medical research in addition to existing funding profiles. Every dollar of estimated savings from health reforms in this Budget will be reinvested in the Fund until it reaches $20 billion.

To establish the Fund, approximately $1 billion in uncommitted funds from the existing Health and Hospitals Fund will be transferred into the Fund at its inception.

The Fund is estimated to reach the $20 billion target capital level by 2020 and the capital base is set to be preserved in perpetuity.

From 2015-16, the net earnings from the Fund will serve as a permanent revenue stream, primarily to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The Fund will distribute around $1 billion a year into medical research from 2022-23.

The additional $1 billion a year in funding will roughly double the Government’s direct funding to medical research.

The establishment of the Fund ensures that the Government meets its commitment to maintain health investment, while delivering a sustainable health system into the future.

This investment, to be managed by the Future Fund Board of Guardians, will help to ensure Australia can continue to advance world leading medical research projects, attract and retain first class researchers and deliver improved health and medical outcomes for all Australians. [1]

Australia’s Treasurer, The Hon Joe Hockey MP announced the biggest medical research endowment fund in the world. In his opinion the fund could be instrumental in finding cures for cancer, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

I will here focus on cancer, and begin by asking Hockey if he has ever wondered why, despite the billions of dollars already spent on cancer research over many decades, and the constant promise of a cure which is forever “just around the corner,” cancer continues to increase?

I wonder if Hockey knows that millions of cancer victims are dead from chemotherapy, radiation, surgery. The medical pharmaceutical industrial complex has not produced a single success story. And they claim that if they had a few billion more dollars, then they would be able to find the cure. Not only has the cancer industry never cured anyone, the cause of death from cancer per 100,000 persons increased from 64.0 in 1910 to 185.9 in 2010—a massive three fold increase. [2] I wonder if he knew these facts before signing-up to this harebrained research project.

Linus Pauling PhD (Two-time Nobel Prize winner) stated the following,

Everyone should know that most cancer research is largely a fraud and that the major cancer research organisations are derelict in their duties to the people who support them.

This medical research endowment fund will be used to sustain cancer research which is deemed by many scientists as a qualified failure and by others, as a complete fraud. The public should rise-up and demand that our leaders and medical research organisations change their approach to cancer research to one which is focused on prevention and the study of the human condition.

A fear of cancer prompts well meaning people to part with their cash in hope of a cure. Cancer research money is the proverbial ‘pot of gold’ for research facilities, charities, pharmaceutical companies, and lobbyists. Treating the sick and dying is big business. Unfortunately, their money is wasted if not squandered. And, no one ever asks the fundamental question—what are these scientists striving for other than a cosy career?

… still the money pours in for “Cancer Research” from kind-hearted, well-meaning people in spite of the fact that the much-advertised “cures” and “discoveries” invariably turn out, year after year, to be no cure at all but rather an aggravation of the trouble, the proof of this being the steady increase of the disease on all sides…

Surely there should be some result to show as a partial excuse for the torturing of so many animals… the public still does not realise that nothing is likely to happen, no progress ever likely or even possible whilst the research is done on demonstrably wrong lines. ~Morley Steynor (1940)

Let’s be clear, the BigPharma industrial complex does not aim for cures. Cures do not fit with it’s business model, nor does prevention. They are in business to sell products. Lots and lots of expensive [ineffective] products.

The transformative power of gene therapy may ultimately spell the end of BigPharma’s monopoly. Yet BigPharma is ready with it’s revised business model to cure patients (previously unheard off) not by drugs but by gene therapy. Such cures will be priced at around $1 million. [3]

I will let Ross Gittins, Economics Editor (15 December 2014), The Sydney Morning Herald have the last word,

What’s the point of it all? Partly it’s an attempt to bamboozle doctors, but mainly it’s designed to allow the government to break its election promise not to cut health spending while claiming it hasn’t broken it, just “reprioritised” health spending.
