A statement and provocative poem by Elizabeth Meehan

01/01/2015

First they came for the Tamils
I did not speak out because I was not a Tamil

Next they came for the Christians and Muslims
I did not speak out because I was not a Christian or a Muslim

Then they came for the poorest Buddhists
I did not speak out because I was not poor

Then they came for me – and there was no one to speak for me
because they were not me.

They said to one another – he must have done something wrong. . .
And no one spoke out for me.

How can I warn them now?
