Vassa at Santi Forest Monastery

05/06/2014

This year I participate in the Vassa at Santi Forest Monastery—my first ever. Vassa or Rains Retreat is the annual retreat observed by Theravada practitioners, and lasts for three lunar months, usually from July. Vassa begins on the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month, which is the day after Asalha Day. Vassa is followed by Kathina, a festival for the community to express their gratitude by bringing donations to temples, especially robes for monks and nuns.

Santi Forest Monastery is a Buddhist Nuns’ monastery with facilities for people to visit, study and practice the teachings of the Buddha. Santi Forest Monastery is set in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia.
