An analogy of diet and mess media

When I inform people that I follow a plant diet, and quote the following slogan to them: Change what you eat – Peace begins on your plate – Change the world – Follow a plant diet! “How do meet your protein requirement?,” is a typical querulous response. The assumption being that protein is only to be found in the corpses of dead animals. Well it’s not.

Selected reasons for not eating meat: it’s unhealthy for humans; environmental degradation; animal cruelty; it’s repulsive to eat the corpses of dead animals; Leo Tolstoy claimed that “vegetarianism is the taproot of humanitarianism.” His point? If we want to sow the seeds of peace, we need to eat a peaceful diet. Eating meat supports killing animals just to satisfy humans’ acquired taste for flesh; the range of foods explodes from a limited selection of centre-of-the-plate meat items to grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables that meat eaters don’t know exist.

Sir Paul McCartney sums it all up,

If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.

When I tell people that I don’t watch mainstream news programmes, and that they should turn off their TV. “How do you know what is going on the world,” is a typical querulous response. What these deluded people don’t realise is that the mass media is the most powerful tool used by the ruling class to manipulate the masses. It shapes and moulds opinions and attitudes and defines what is normal and acceptable.

Is it not time to make a clean break from this self-induced imprisonment of images and sounds that spills out of the television machine?

Almost all people are hypnotics. The proper authority saw to it that the proper belief should be induced, and the people believed properly. ~Charles Fort

The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses. ~Malcolm X

Watching television is like taking black spray paint to your third eye. ~Bill Hicks
