Australian politicians have shown they are just as likely to knife a member of their own side as their opposition

I don’t have a weak stomach, but I must confess that watching mainstream TV news does get me nauseated. So I do so hardly ever at all. I had of course not been following the coverage of Australia’s reinstated prime minister following his hiatus of some 3 years and 3 days. Yet, such matters are almost impossible to ignore. When I turned on my TV to watch Eggheads (a BBC quiz show) I was confronted by a highly excited flush-faced and agitated bunch of know-all conspiratorial TV commentators engaged in commentating on the downfall and rise of Australia’s prime ministers, and thereby shaping public opinion by telling us what to think about these events. These two politicians had ascended to higher office by climbing a ladder of lies and evasion in their lust for power. So my favourite TV show was pushed aside for this circus event. I did learn that politicians have over the centuries shown they are just as likely to knife a member of their own side as their opposition.

These commentators manufacture narratives wholly divorced from facts. I keep returning to H.L. Mencken who stated,

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

This the story of a generation – lied to, again and again, yet ultimately powerless. How 23,098,003 Australians can be controlled by a couple of hundred people is shocking, yet they do, and they are nothing but fodder and money earners for them all. And we watch this disgusting scandal unfold, and what will we do about it?
